Cancercare is celebrating Women’s Month

In August Cancercare commemorate Women’s Month as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and our South Arican society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.

9 August 1956

In August Cancercare commemorate Women’s Month as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. ‘Strijdom, you have tampered with the women, you have struck a rock…’ This was the song composed to mark this historic march which was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom and our South African society at large. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.

Great strides have been made since 1994 to improve the status of women in South Africa, but looking at statistics in general, a shocking number of women and children are being abused and killed in this country. In a recent article on www.news24.com it was said that every eight hours in South Africa, a women is killed by an intimate partners, according to the SA Medical Research Council. One in five (21%) of women in a relationship have experienced physical violence by a partner, Stats SA said in its South Africa Demographic and Health Survey 2016 released in May this year. And many more cases go unreported.

Women have made vast improvements in their lifestyles in the past few decades from holding positions in governments to simple things like getting a job and supporting themselves. Women are an important element of our society – in many cases, the cornerstone of a family, the one who holds it all together.

At Cancercare we salute and celebrate all women not only in this month of August, but throughout the year as women are the real architects of our society.
