Cape Gate

History of Unit

The need for an Oncology treatment centre in the Cape Gate area was identified in collaboration with the Department of Health in the Western Cape. CapeGate Oncology Centre, was constructed in response to this identified need and was subsequently opened in May 2011.

The centre is easily accessible from the N1 highway and is adjacent to the CapeGate Medi – Clinic

The building was planned to use as much natural light as possible and to conform to “green standards” in terms of use of natural light inside the building. Large open windows used throughout the building assist in creating a spacious environment and also provide picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.

Cancercare’s Cape Gate Centre is easily accessible from the N1 highway and adjacent to the Cape Gate Medi-Clinic.

The Centre’s Clinical Research Unit has been awarded the title of “Centre of Excellence” making it one of only six in the world to bear this prestigious title.

Excellence in service

Cape Gate Cancercare Oncology provides patients with treatment at Cape Gate but also in more than one centre in the surrounding areas.

A consultative clinic in Durbanville is run by Dr Laura Serfontein where patients are consulted and treatment decisions are made in conjunction with the local doctors.

Worcester has a fully functional weekly consulting room and provides chemotherapy. A combined oncology multidisciplinary team meet once a week to discuss all new patients as well as any treatment decisions in relapsed case.

Oncologists attend the Paramount Clinics in Namibia; consulting and treatments are done on a weekly basis.

Cape Gate is also renowned for its work in brachytherapy field. Currently we provide brachytherapy services to urologists in Worcester, Paarl, Durbanville, Panorama and Kuils River.

Dr Hanlie du Toit is also part of the Combined Head and Neck oncology clinic in Panorama. This comprehensive team provides service as part of a multidisciplinary team offering patients world class therapy in these complex tumours.

Monthly interdisciplinary oncology meetings are held in Cape Gate and Durbanville. These meetings provide a platform for offering patients world-class interdisciplinary discussions and decision making as to optimize care.

At Cancercare’s Cape Gate Oncology Centre, we have access to all oncology care as well as world renowned cutting edge therapy. Patients are offered the opportunity to have access to genetic testing, DNA analysis and gene evaluation of the tumours.

Whilst we have access to world class drugs, we are very cost conscious and treat in line with ICON and SAOC guidelines.

We provide holistic care. The services of the oncology social worker are available to patients and their families in our unit. A monthly oncology support group is part of our holistic care.

At Cancercare's Cape Gate Oncology Centre we have access to all oncology care as well as world renowned cutting edge therapy.
