We are delighted to welcome Dr. Gary McMichael to the Oncology Unit at Cancercare Vredenburg on the west coast.
Dr. McMichael brings a wealth of experience in medical oncology, having dedicated his career to advancing cancer treatment and patient care.
A graduate of St Stithians College in Randburg, Dr. McMichael obtained his MBBCh and FCP from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In 1999, he earned his registration as a Medical Oncologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), following specialized training at the University of Pretoria.
His medical journey began in 1991 as an intern at Benoni Hospital, progressing to roles as a Medical Officer at Benoni and Hillbrow Hospitals. From 1993 to 1996, he served as a Registrar in Internal Medicine at Hillbrow Hospital and Wits University. In 1997, he was appointed Consultant in Internal Medicine in the Department of Endocrinology at Hillbrow Hospital.
Between 1997 and 1999, Dr. McMichael worked as a Consultant in the Department of Medical Oncology at Pretoria Academic Hospital and the University of Pretoria. During this time, he also practiced privately at Muelmed Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital with Drs Cohen, Eek, and Slabber.
From 1999 to 2004, he was a Private Medical Oncologist at the West Rand Oncology Centre and Sandton Oncology Centre, as part of Drs Vorobiof, Chasen, McMichael & Associates. Since 2004, he has been the Director of the West Rand Oncology Centre.
Dr. McMichael has been actively involved in clinical trials and research, with his work appearing in numerous publications. A sought-after speaker, he has presented at several international oncology conferences. He has also held memberships in esteemed oncology organizations, including the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) since 1997, and more recently, has contributed as a member of the ENCORE focus group advisory panel.
With his extensive expertise and commitment to oncology, Dr. McMichael will be a valuable addition to the Cancercare team. We warmly welcome him and look forward to the impact he will make in advancing patient care at Cancercare West Coast, Vredenburg unit.
