Dr Johann Raats joined the Rondebosch Cancercare team as Clinical and Radiation Oncologist at the beginning of May this year.
Dr Raats has more than 29 years of experience in oncology, and his areas of specialisation are breast, gastrointestinal, gynaecological, urogenital and skin cancers.
Dr Raats decided to specialise in Oncology two years after he received his medical degree from the University of Pretoria in 1985. Amongst his long list of qualification is a PhD in Medical Oncology which Dr Raats received from the University of Pretoria in 1994. After that, he specialised in Radiation Oncology with a Master of Medicine degree.
Before joining Cancercare, Dr Raats had his private practice in Panorama Mediclinic for nine years whereafter he joined GVI Oncology [now Cancercare] in 2004 as Clinical Research Director and Clinical Lead for the Independent Oncology Network of SA [Icon]. After he furthered his specialisation in clinical and radiation oncology, he returned to a private oncology practice in 2016 with Dr Rainier Frohling at Vincent Pallotti Hospital before joining Cancercare in May this year.
Dr Raats says his primary interest and passion in life is the treatment and care of patients with cancer. “I believe in individualised, modern clinical care of patients diagnosed with cancer.” Furthermore, he has done extensive clinical cancer research in the past and hopes to become involved in this now that he had joined Cancercare again, said Dr Raats.
