Cancercare is pleased to welcome Dr Travis van der Riet to the George unit, further strengthening our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality oncology care to patients in the Garden Route region. As a specialist radiation oncologist, Dr van der Riet brings a combination of strong academic training, broad clinical experience, and a compassionate, patient-centred approach to care.

Dr van der Riet completed his MBChB at Stellenbosch University before pursuing specialist training in Radiation and Clinical Oncology at the University of Cape Town. During this time, he obtained his MMed in Radiation Oncology with distinction and achieved Fellowship of the College of Radiation Oncology (CMSA). He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Medicine, reflecting his interest in supporting patients holistically throughout their cancer journey. His academic training has equipped him with a strong foundation in evidence-based treatment planning, while his clinical experience has shaped a thoughtful and personalised approach to patient care.

His experience spans both public and private healthcare environments, including roles within busy oncology units and multidisciplinary hospital settings. Throughout his training and early career, Dr van der Riet has worked with a wide range of malignancies and has been involved in radiation therapy planning, systemic therapy support, and palliative care management. He has also participated in multidisciplinary team discussions, academic teaching, and collaborative decision-making, all of which contribute to comprehensive and coordinated care for patients.

Dr van der Riet is passionate about combining clinical excellence with clear, compassionate communication. He understands that a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, and he places strong emphasis on ensuring patients and their families feel informed, supported, and involved in treatment decisions. His approach focuses on tailoring treatment plans to each individual, balancing effectiveness with quality of life considerations.

With his addition to the George unit, Cancercare continues to expand specialist oncology services closer to where patients live. Access to local care plays an important role in reducing the burden of travel and enabling patients to receive treatment within their own communities, supported by family and loved ones.
