Wonderful New Addition to Cancercare Team

Cancercare is delighted to announce the addition of Dr. Aqeela Sirkhotte to our esteemed team this month.

 

Dr. Sirkhotte graduated in 2008 from the University of Cape Town with an MBChB degree. Her journey in the medical field began as a Medical Intern at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, from January 2009 to December 2010. She continued her career as a Community Service Medical Officer at Mowbray Maternity Hospital (Neonatology) in 2011.

Over the years, Dr. Sirkhotte gained diverse experience, working at institutions such as Dirkie Uys Day Hospital, Elsies River Day Hospital, and various frail care facilities in Cape Town in 2012 and 2013. From 2013 to 2016, she served as a Medical Officer at Dr. Abdurahman Day Clinic in Mitchells Plain

In 2017, Dr. Sirkhotte took on the role of General Practitioner at Kromboom Medical Centre, Cape Town. This role exposed her to a wide array of clinical cases, including minor surgical procedures. She also dedicated time to volunteering at the Oncology outpatient clinic at Tygerberg Tertiary Hospital, Cape Town, starting in July 2017.

From 2019 to 2022, Dr. Sirkhotte further honed her expertise as a Registrar in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Groote Schuur Hospital. During this period, she completed rotations in various specialties, including Breast, Gynae, ENT and Lung, Pediatric and Neurology, GIT, Head and Neck, and Lymphoma.

Dr. Sirkhotte’s journey within the department led her to become the senior registrar and the acting consultant for the Gynae rotation. Reflecting on this experience, she shared,

 “This gave me the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary meetings, make treatment decisions, and develop palliative plans and treatment volumes. This invaluable experience has shaped my future career aspirations.” When asked about her ambitions, she stated, “My long-term goal is to contribute to the advancement of oncological treatment, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for our patients.”
